ENGLISH DEPARTMENT AT UCLA

The graduate program of the UCLA English Department is one of the strongest, most diverse, and most intellectually exciting programs in the country.  Consistently highly ranked across fields, it receives over 300 applications for admission each year, and enrolls an entering class of 14-16 students on average, all of whom receive full funding.  The course of study balances critical rigor and historical breadth with flexibility and individual focus.  Classes embody both the traditional values of the discipline and the exciting innovations that are reshaping the field.  Training and supervised experience in teaching is an integral part of the preparation we offer for the profession.  A variety of field-specific research centers, colloquia, and informal reading groups provide important adjuncts to formal classroom experience.  Our proximity to several important research centers—the Clark Library, the Huntington Library, the Getty Research Institute—offers distinct advantages to many of our graduate students.  Our graduate student community is also known for its exceptional liveliness and sociability.

Students are admitted only in the fall, and only for the Ph.D.; students may be awarded an M.A. degree in the course of the Ph.D. Program, but we do not have a separate master’s program.  Our job placement rate is among the highest in the nation, and our students have been hired at a wide range of institutions, including small liberal arts colleges, large public universities, and prestigious private universities: in 2007 we placed 16 students in tenure-track jobs at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, Coe College, Columbia University, Converse College, Georgetown University, Indiana University, Purdue University, Rollins College, SUNY-Stony Brook, the University of Tennessee, UC-Davis, UT-Austin, Vassar College, West Chester University, Westmont College, and the University of Wisconsin.  In recent years our graduates have also won prestigious postdoctoral fellowships at Stanford University, Williams College, Mount Holyoke College, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (Harvard).  The faculty of the department are fully committed to supporting our students as they move beyond the Ph.D. and into the profession.

We invite you to browse our website and learn more about the range of activities and wealth of accomplishments that characterize the students and faculty in our graduate program.
