I wish to only complete a master's degree at UCLA. Is this possible?

We do not offer a terminal master's degree. We do offer a PhD in English literature.

Do you offer specializations in Rhetoric, Composition, or Creative Writing?

We do not offer these specializations at this time.

How many students apply? How many are admitted?

We receive approximately 350 applications. Our target is a class size of 14-15 new students on average per year.

Does the department welcome visits from prospective students?

Yes. Please contact the Graduate Assistant for more information.

I plan on taking the GRE Subject Test in Literature in December. Will this be a problem?

The postmark deadline for applications and supporting materials is December 15. We guarantee review of all applications postmarked by this date. If you take the December GRE subject test, scores will be reported sometime around the third week of January. The admissions committee does its best to review as many applications as possible, but it cannot guarantee that applications completed a month after the deadline will be reviewed.

What are the department's minimum scores for the GRE general and subject test in Literature?

There are no minimum scores required, but a combined score of 1300 (GRE verbal and subject test in literature) or individual scores of 650 can be used to gauge performance.

Where can I get more information about the GRE general and subject tests?

Go to http://www.gre.org for test dates and registration information.

What are the requirements for the statement of purpose?

There is no suggested length for the SOP. In years past, it has averaged between 2-3 pages in length. You do not need to follow a specific format in regards to spacing or margins.

Must my letters of recommendation be sent from me along with my other supporting materials?

No. Professors can mail your letter directly to our department. It is also acceptable for university letter services to send copies of your letters to our department.

Can I submit two short papers instead of one 15-25 page writing sample? OR My sample is longer than 25 pages. Will this be a problem?

It is recommended that you submit one 15-25 page writing sample. This length provides for a substantial critical analysis of literature, yet is not burdensome for the reader to review. Ultimately, it is your decision how to best showcase your preparation and potential.

As an international applicant, what additional documentation must I provide?

International students whos first language is not English must submit a TOEFL score. All international applicants must complete and submit a Confidental Financial Statement (available at http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu/gasaa/library/cfstatement.pdf).

What type of graduate funding is available?

A traditional funding package consists of:
* $16,500 stipend
* full fees (including non-resident tuition for the first year, if applicable)
* $2500 summer stipend for the first year
* 4 years of teaching assistantship

Applicants interested in applying for the Cota Robles Fellowship must complete the fellowship section of the online application.

How are applications reviewed?

Review begins January 10th. The process begins with four two-member committees reviewing all completed applications, and then a three-member committee reviews the top 100. Forty finalists are selected from this group, and the entire graduate admissions committee convenes to finalize the selection of applicants offered admissions to the graduate program. Admissions offers are sent via email late February.
