About the event

  • The departmental event is a smaller, more personal ceremony for our graduates and their families. You will be able to celebrate your accomplishment with your fellow classmates and the English department's faculty. Around 340 English and American Literature & Culture majors participated last year.
  • The event is approximately 90 to 120 minutes long.
  • Each student has his/her name called as s/he walks across the stage. Second majors, minors, honors and awards are also acknowledged.
  • GradImages will provide professional photography services, allowing students to purchase individual photographs of their special moment. More information can be found at the GradImages website http://www.gradimages.com/universityofcalifornialosangeles.
  • We have one faculty and one English alumni speaker. Our faculty speaker is Felicity Nussbaum, Ph.D. Our alumni speaker is Caprice Willard:

Caprice Willard serves as vice president/regional planning manager for women's apparel for Macy's Southwest Region. Willard was recruited from UCLA (1994 B.A. English) into Macy's Executive Trainee Program and worked her way up through various positions, both in the buying offices and stores, until she ultimately became a buyer for dresses and then a senior buyer for cosmetics. Leveraging her vast experience in many different businesses, Willard was promoted to divisional merchandise manager of intimate apparel/hosiery/slippers in 2004.

In 2006, Willard moved to San Francisco and was promoted to the position of vice president/divisional merchandise manager of cosmetics for the former Macy's West division and held this position for three years. Following the completion of a corporate localization initiative in 2009, Willard was able to relocate back to her hometown of Los Angeles and assume her current position of vice president/regional planning manager for women's apparel.

Active in her community and recognized as a leader in her field, Caprice Willard was named one of the most powerful women in finance/retail by Women of Color Magazine in the fall 2012 issue.

  • Most students wear their caps and gowns, but it is not mandatory.
  • The Letters and Science Commencement officially confers degrees with all the formalities of a university commencement event. This event does not.
