The Department of English and the Center for Community Learning offer 4 units of English 195 on a Pass/No Pass grading basis. This course requires active participation at an agreed-upon field site, weekly journals, bi-weekly discussions with the English Coordinator, and a final paper. English 195 can be repeated for a maximum of 8 units. If the internship is held at the same site for more than one term, the student's job responsibilities and final paper must be different.

Requirements

All students enrolled in 195 must:

  • Turn in completed Learning Agreement with all required signatures by the end of Week 3.
  • Schedule and attend a discussion session with the CCL Coordinator every other week.
  • Submit a 2-3 page journal by e-mail (no attachments please) by 5:00 PM each Friday. Please send journals to etemplet@ucla.edu. This is my work e-mail, so it does not get checked daily, but it allows me to keep track of all of your journal entries.
  • Complete a final project (7-10p paper) which has been pre-approved by the Coordinator and supervising professor before the end of 10th week.

Failure to complete ANY of the above requirements will result in a NO PASS grade.

Discussion Sections:

Every other week you will meet with the CCL Coordinator for a discussion of the way your internship is progressing. Be prepared to discuss both your journal and your experiences at your internship site. If you have a busy schedule, it is a good idea to make a standing appointment.

Journals:

Journals are not a chronicle of how you spend your time at work. Instead they should be a thoughtful analysis of some aspect of your experience as an intern. Your first journal can be based on your expectations for the internship. How did you come to this internship? What are you looking forward to; what are you afraid of? Your final journal can be a reflection of the overall experience-what was it what you thought it would be back in journal 1? In between, your journals should be detailed reflections upon your experience in the workplace. The point of these assignments is to help you reflect upon the job you are doing and the field you may be going into. Any journal that helps you learn or analyze your experience is a good journal.

In one journal, you might describe the spatial layout of your workplace and try to answer some questions about it: How are the offices arranged? Does the floor plan reveal any power relationships or social hierarchies? What do the choices in décor and furniture reveal? How do people dress? How does the physical environment influence the way that people interact? Does it influence any particular kinds of productivity?

In another journal you might describe your co-workers and supervisors: their demeanor, physical features, unusual mannerisms-anything that helps you understand how and why they do the job they do. What are their particular strengths in their positions?

Final Paper:

The topic of your final paper must be approved by the Coordinator and your supervising professor before the end of 9th week. Papers that have not received approval by this date will not be accepted. The due date for the paper will be determined by you, your professor and your coordinator. Please submit three copies of the paper: one to your professor, one to your Coordinator, and one to the English Counseling Office Rolfe 2222.

More information about paper topics will be forthcoming.

Enrollment Instructions

Students interested in a 195 internship should make an appointment to meet with the appropriate Coordinator at the Center for Community Learning (A333 Murphy) to secure an internship and set up a Learning Agreement. When this is done, you will need to officially enroll in the class.

  • Go to MyUCLA and click upon the "Special Studies Courses" link.
  • Follow the instructions for setting up a contract for English 195.
  • Fill out the form with as much information as you can and then print.
  • Sign the form.
  • Get approval signature from your sponsoring faculty member (Professor Lowell Gallagher, Professor Chris Mott, or Professor Rafael PĂ©rez-Torres).
  • Drop off the form in Professor Gallagher's box for approval. He will then forward it to the counseling office. A counselor will then enroll you in English 195.
