UCLA Subject Matter Program in English for Secondary School Teachers

NOTE: Students must have formally stated their intention to follow this program with a departmental counselor by 6/30/05 and must complete all requirements by 7/1/09.

Students that are interested in teaching English at the junior high and/or high school levels must take the CSET (California Subject Examinations for Teachers) in English or complete a waiver program to verify knowledge of the subject they wish to teach.

Students wishing to complete the SMWP (Subject Matter Waiver Program) for English should consult with a departmental advisor as soon as possible in order to complete requirements for their major and the waiver in the most efficient way possible. Completion of the English or American Literature and Culture major requirements does not equal completion of the SMWP.

Completion of the SMWP checklist may be done after a student graduates. Once all requirements are met, contact the undergraduate counseling office at (310) 825-1389 or munguia@english.ucla.edu. After all requirements have been verified as completed, the student will receive a letter waiving him/her from taking the CSET in English.
