Victorian Novellas

T/Th 12:30-1:45

The title of this course-"Victorian Novellas"-is something of an oxymoron: the Victorians were famous for their gigantic novels. In this course, however, we shall read their novellas and a few of their shorter stories. In doing so, we will explore a range of genres, including detective, ghost, science, decadent, New Woman, and fantasy stories; in some cases looking at the very first of their kind. Authors we will read may include Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell, George Eliot, Lewis Carroll, Arthur Conan Doyle, Oscar Wilde, and Henry James. Throughout, our aim will be to look back at this age that invented the "snap shot" by examining a wide-ranging collection of their narrative snap shots. Requirements: an oral presentation, two 6-page papers, a research paper, and lively class participation.
