Title

A special word needs to be said about the title of the "Pistel." Like all medieval titles, it is quite unstable in the manuscript tradition, but its particular variations are unusual, and perhaps significant. Even within one manuscript (HM 114) the poem is called variously "Susanne," "the storye of Susanne and Danyell," and the "Pistel of Susanne." Even though the story comes from the biblical Book of Daniel, the more reliable versions of this poem (and the reference to it in Andrew of Wynton's Chronykil) attribute it in some degree to Susanna. The story, as it was known to the late fourteenth century, is hers. To call the poem a "pistel," too, has interesting and unavoidable New Testament echoes, for no book in the Hebrew Bible goes by that name.
