Education
Eric J. Sundquist is Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities and a member of the Department of English at Johns Hopkins University. He received his B.A. from the University of Kansas (1974) and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University (1978).

Professor Sundquist is the author or editor of twelve books in the area of American literature and culture, including King’s Dream (2009); Strangers in the Land: Blacks, Jews, Post-Holocaust America (2005), which received the Weinberg Judaic Studies Institute Book Award; and To Wake the Nations: Race in the Making of American Literature (1993), which received the James Russell Lowell Prize from the Modern Language Association for best book published during the year and the Christian Gauss Award from Phi Beta Kappa for the best book in the humanities. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1997, and in 2007 was named a recipient of a Distinguished Achievement Award from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which supported a three-year program of research and teaching activities at UCLA related to the role of the Holocaust in American and modern culture.
