American studies; ethnic studies; media studies; cultural studies; contemporary American fiction and non-fiction.

Publications

Made in America: Self-Styled Success from Horatio Alger to Oprah Winfrey (Minnesota, 1997), editor of The Black Aesthetic Movement (Gale, 1991) and co-editor (with Jenny Sharpe) of Literatures Across America: A Source Guide for Multicultural Curriculum Development (1992). Contributed book chapters to Microphone Fiends: Youth Music and Youth Culture (Routledge, 1994) and The Seductions of Biography (Routledge, 1996). Articles have appeared in American Quarterly, Cultural Critique, New Literary History, Social Text, Transition, and other journals.

Current Research

An interdisciplinary study of the "white ethnic" movement in American culture and politics around 1970.
