Interests

A senior lecturer in the UCLA English Department, Stephen Dickey has received numerous teaching prizes, including the Luckman Distinguished Teaching Award in 1993.  He teaches various courses in Shakespeare, the English Renaissance, and the Beat Generation, introductory courses in poetry and drama, and the Honors seminar for Creative Writing majors.  Since 2002, Dickey has also served on the faculty of the NEH-Teaching Shakespeare Institute, a program for high school teachers from across the country, held biennially at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C.  Recent publications include works on Romeo and Juliet, the Henry IV plays, and American interest in Shakespeare during the Civil War.  His entry on the Elizabethans’ favorite sport, bearbaiting, will appear in the forthcoming Greenwood Shakespeare Encyclopedia.   Among the subjects of his recent public lectures on Shakespeare are performance theory, stage history, film, and the visual arts.  In 2009, as part of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial celebration, he spoke at Ford’s Theater on Lincoln’s knowledge of Shakespeare’s plays.
