19th-Century American Literature. First Stage.

Alice is interested in constructions of gender and femininity, particularly as they are created by writers such as Henry James, Edith Wharton, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. In particular, she is interested in the influence of prevalent nineteenth-century scientific and economic theories upon literary representations of gender.
