Preparatory Coursework

The Major: 10 Upper Division Courses

  • All courses used to fulfill requirements for the American Literature and Culture major must be 4 or 5 units
    and taken for a letter grade.
  • Seminars may not be applied toward requirements A (American Literature Courses) or C (GREDS).
  • When choosing classes to fulfill requirements for the major, students are expected to select those courses
    which best reflect their own interests and simultaneously contribute towards a coherent program in literary
    studies.

A. 5 American Literature Courses:

English 166A-C, 167A-B, 170A-C, 172C, 173A-C, 174A-C, 175, 176, 177 (2 of the 5 courses must be prior to 1900:
English 166A-C, 167A-B, 170A; and 175, 176, 177 if on a pre-1900 topic) Please Note: 168 cannot apply

B. 1 Senior Capstone/Seminar:

English 183A-C, M191A-C; (and 180, 181A-B, 182E-F, 184, M191D-F if on an American topic)

C. 2 Gender, Race, Ethnicity, Disability, and Sexuality Studies
    in American Literature Courses:

English M102A-B, M104A-E, M105 A-E, 106; (and 100, M101B-D, M103, M107A-B, 108, 109 if on an American topic)

2 English Electives: English 100-199  

OR

2 Upper Division American Culture Courses (both from one department)
