Introduction-The Arts at UCLA: Academics, Exhibitions, Acquisitions, and the Brushstrokes In Between

The sixties were filled with many memorable events and changes. Not many escaped the decade without being impacted in some form or another, and UCLA was no different. During the sixties, UCLA established itself as one of the best universities. From excellence in areas such as academics, sports, research, and growth, UCLA gained worldwide recognition and respect. Impressive to the same degree was UCLA’s role in the arts. By mainly focusing on the arts at UCLA from 1960-1961, though I do also look at other major artistic developments from the rest of the decade, I have compiled information that reveals the merits of the arts during this historic time. The topics chosen to illustrate UCLA’s role in the arts are:

the restructure of the College of Applied Arts into the College of Fine Arts
organizations, committees, and groups that played a role in the areas of the visual arts and performing arts

the creation of the Institute of Ethnomusicology, and the Museum and Laboratories of Ethnic Arts and Technology

art exhibitions from 1960-1961
art acquisitions
individuals who were influential in the arts at UCLA
