Athletics

The University of California, Los Angeles, presently known for its academic and athletic dominance, was a beacon of excellence in the 1960s. While its academics had been world renown for quite some time, UCLA's athletic department was only just becoming a super power. By the time 1966 rolled around, however, the Bruins were expected to win. Whether it be in the form of John Wooden's national champion basketball team or Jim Bush's incredible track and field squad, UCLA's success provided its students with reasons to be proud. Under the leadership of Athletic Director J.D. Morgan, UCLA's coaching staff was the recipient of a major overhaul during this time. After the changes were implemented, many sports took a turn for the better. Tommy Prothro turned the UCLA Football team into a force to be reckoned with while the Mens' Water Polo team continued its streak of supremacy. Finally the Bruins had the weapons to challenge USC's authority in the realm of sports.
