Affairs at UCLA: Life as a Bruin

Forty
years ago, the University
of California at Los Angeles
experienced significant changes and events that mirrored the many
pivotal movements, changing politics, and transformation of specific
societal elements that were so symbolic of nineteen sixties culture.
Many historians and critics alike have examined this decade of history
through examining the larger national issues that occurred; however,
the ubiquity of the university made UCLA an epicenter of many 60’s
themes.
Issues
such as race, gender, politics, and foreign policy all arose within
student life at UCLA, and many baby boomers took active roles in calling
for change. As the university emerged from these years and a new decade
dawned known as the 70’s many of these issues continued to be
influenced by 1960’s culture.
The
underlying questions that these following pages attempt to answer
are: “What exactly were some of the important aspects of UCLA
students’ lives? Were there any internal affairs that the school
faced and what were some of the interesting lifestyle issues that
made a UCLA student uniquely a “Bruin”?
The
following pages delve into these issues more specifically focusing
on the year 1972 as many of these issues received significantly more
attention during this time period. From the onset of the U.C budget
crisis to living in unique residence halls, the typical 1970’s
UCLA student lived a diverse and richly cultural lifestyle…
